Where the Wild Men Are. Tuesdays 7.30pm
Ben Fogle joins a variety of brave individuals who’ve chosen to venture down an alternative path.
In this series, he meets Robert, a 70-year-old master craftsman who’s been living in the Arkansas wood for 20 years; Judith, a widow who – at 80 – has rejected a modern way of life and is determined to live alone in the wilds of Ireland; and Julien, a Canadian living as a Buddhist monk in the remote jungles of Thailand.
He also meets a nomadic family of four exploring New Zealand’s wild landscapes, a Norwegian adventurer who lives on her own island in the Arctic Circle, and a couple who’ve spent 12 years walking around the world and are now hiking across the mountains of Bulgaria.
Operation Arctic with Simon Reeve. Tuesdays 8.30pm
Travel to the edge of the Arctic – and beyond. Witness polar bears as they wait to begin their hunt, and meet the people who work in this extreme environment.
As vast as it is stunning, the Arctic spans eight countries and six million square miles of frozen ocean. But as temperatures rise and the ice starts to melt, it has become a valuable battleground. Shipping routes are opening up. Oil, gas and minerals are tantalizingly within reach. Suddenly the polar bears aren’t the only ones on the hunt.
This ground-breaking series captures the critical moment when the Arctic seasons change and the polar bears begin their journey. Explore the tiny town of Churchill – the ‘polar bear capital of the world’ – which is overrun by bears for a few weeks every year. Meet the Polar Bear Cops who keep the town safe, and the tourists desperate for a killer selfie.
A team of expert presenters explores the wider Arctic. They head to the oil fields of Alaska, round up reindeer with the Swedish Sami, and discover what it takes to keep a Russian icebreaker afloat.
Throughout it all, the bears battle to survive. What happens if the ice continues to melt? And what wider implications does this have for us all?
Tales from the Coast with Robson Green. Starts Tuesday February 26
Britain has one of the most varied coastal landscapes in the world - from sweeping sands and rugged cliffs to mudflats and spits. It’s home to colourful seaside towns and historic fishing villages.
Robson Green travels along some of Britain's most fascinating stretches of coastline to discover just what it is about the British shoreline that continues to enthrall and inspire.
There are surprises and challenges along the way as he explores the Welsh coast with his old friend Jerome Flynn, tackles a terrifying cliff known as The Devil’s Slide, reunites former warring Mods and Rockers at the seaside and unexpectedly makes the headlines when he gets involved in a real life coastal rescue.
In each episode Robson travels along a different stretch of coast - from the wild and remote Outer Hebrides in North-West Scotland to the unspoiled beaches and bays of North Devon. On each journey he’ll take on exciting new experiences and meet people who share Robson’s passion for the coast.
Robson will go wild camping in the Outer Hebrides, climb dramatic sea cliffs in the Bristol Channel, explore the hidden coves of South-West Wales and visit some of Britain’s most wild and remote islands.
The Grantchester star finds out how the British coastline has influenced both the way we work and the way we spend our holidays - and how has being an island nation has shaped the Britain we know today.
